We have arrived at a fork in the road. Friendica now has most all the pieces it needs to become "the network" (la red) but from here on the paths diverge.
One thing they don't teach you in computer science is that people tend to follow arrogance, greed, ambition, and ego. They do not tend to follow cooperation, openness, and altruism - which are perceived as weakness.
Red will not be open for some time. I will introduce some new concepts, some of which aren't available in any network today. There's a lot of work to do and I'm not going to give away all the surprises.
The scalability will be dramatically improved once federation with other services is given the boot and a couple of tables are cleaned up. The pieces to make it highly scalable are already there, for anybody who wishes to solve this problem on the Friendica side and keep cross service federation. I'll fix a few bugs, but I'm terminating active development.
For those who are only here to whine about what Friendica is or isn't or does or doesn't do - it's open source. It belongs to you. Stop whining and make it do what you want, or go back to Facebook/Diaspora/Identi.ca/whatever.
I suspect it will just wither and die because nobody really wants a federated social web.
Prove me wrong.
