Also I think it's a good idea to put a Bayesian spam filter in Friendica sooner rather than later. We're much better positioned to deal with unwanted posts than some of our federation partners, but it's much better to have this in place and not be used than not to have it when it's needed.

This isn't difficult, however I'm faced with a choice and wanted to take a show of hands. Whether the spam filter training data should be global for a site, or if it is per-person.

If it is global, it will work instantly for new members without requiring their own corpus of spam decisions. It will also catch a post that several other people on the site flag.

The downside of a global filter is somebody who has legitimate conversations about penis enlargment and Rolex watches could be seriously inconvenienced. Such people do exist. It's also likely that MafiaWars posts won't be visible in anybody's stream.

I'm leaning towards personal so that you can tailor it to your own likes/dislikes, but the obvious benefits of a global filter make it a tough call.

Currently comparing existing OpenID server technology for use in Zot-id.

Zot-id is Friendica's next-generation internet scale access control which is based on OpenID, URI templates, and webfinger - and is completely free and open technology.

Many decentralised social projects (such as Diaspora and StatusNet) are unable to apply access controls to things like photos, file attachments, and profiles - and instead make all of these resources public (perhaps "obscured" but ultimately visible to anybody with an internet connection).

Even Facebook cannot provide private photos as it uses caching servers to deliver them. If you know the URL of a "private" photo at one of the caching servers, you can access it, regardless of the privacy settings on the photo.

This is completely unacceptable.

Friendica provides complete photo, attachment and profile privacy today, but the technology we currently use (DFRN) only works for Friendica members. Friends on Diaspora, StatusNet, Facebook, Twitter, etc. are currently not allowed to access these resources because we cannot prove their identity.

Zot-id let's anybody (using any internet software) apply access controls to any resource on the web, and use OpenID to authenticate it. We feel that this technology is so critical to the future of the internet that we are making the Zot-id specifications public domain.

If you have a Google, LiveJournal, WordPress.Com, MySpace or AOL account, you have OpenID today. Soon all Friendica members will also have OpenID accounts.

We are also investigating how to extend Zot-id to allow for optional Facebook Connect authentication, bringing this useful technology to most of the internet - including those in the walled gardens. It would of course be more pleasant if Facebook embraced open standards, but we don't expect that to happen any time soon.

The latest Friendica update adds a new ("moderated") row to the item table . Adding things to the item table traditionally gives us grief on larger sites so this is a heads up. We've had a few reports already of trouble. If you do a git pull and things go strange, make sure that update_1115() ran successfully and completed by examining if you have a "moderated" row in the item table (tinyint(1) NOT NULL) and that it is indexed. If anything goes wrong, run the sql from update.php:update_1115() manually:

ALTER TABLE 'item' ADD 'moderated'
TINYINT( 1 ) NOT NULL DEFAULT '0' AFTER 'pubmail',
ADD INDEX ('moderated')

A huge chunk of the internet is going dark to protest proposed US legal initiatives. I'm sympathetic, but think the right thing to do is to figure out how to communicate once the internet does turn into a hostile medium. It's only a matter of time.

The latest thinking is to abstract out the entire DNS/webfinger stack. Instead of user@host, it might be user@something - where "something" is a somewhat arbitrary pointer to a list of communication channels/endpoints/resources that might change, and has no direct linkage to DNS.

One would start off a friendship with user@host, but after that the RHS becomes a dynamic thing and might turn into mike@collosus where mike@colossus expands to a set of instructions, such as

try zot:mike@macgirvin.com, then try zot:mike@somewhere.else.com, and after that check with bob@icarus and liz@noonapple for a current pointer. If no current pointer can be found, send a private post to facebook:http://facebook.com/nnnnnnn with a cc to mailto:didgeridoo99838641@1.1.1.1:3000

In this case I would always be mike@collosus and could re-appear on any medium using any network or protocol simply by contacting bob@icarus and/or liz@noonapple to provide updated pointers to my other friends.

There could be many "mike"s as their could be many "collosus". These are not necessarily unique and could point to different instructions. The only thing unique is the combination.

Started the morning by getting kicked by one of the horses. The largest one, of course - and her aim (at my thigh) was spot on.

I believe I may have invented some new cuss words.

Then got a request to retrieve a file from backup - and discovered that the backup system had gone silent more than a week ago. File not found.

Then performed a git merge from the wrong branch. Took almost an hour to undo.

Can I maybe just go back to bed and start this day over?

Those who are wondering why they haven't seen Zot! yet - it's because there's a lot happening and I'm re-thinking the whole strategy before committing it to code (and migrating all of Friendica to the new platform).

In the last few months the US government has gone more "rogue" with regard to freedom of the internet and freedom in general and I'm looking at various other transport mechanisms for Friendica messages. Not certain where it's going yet, but this is just a heads up because I know that some folks have been waiting to see progress on zot.

Have been tossing around some very interesting strategies. More later.

Right handed Travis pickers have it so easy. The thumb thumps out the bass/rhythm lines. Easy. Us reverse lefties are in another world entirely. The thumb (and often forefinger) are for melody. Bass can be any of forefinger, middle, ring or pinky (pinky is really difficult!). But this isn't consistent between different syncopation patterns and sometimes changes within a single tune. Many times I'll be playing along just fine and all of a sudden ask myself - oops, which finger is doing bass right now? I forgot.

After ten years of fingerstyle (and 45 years of guitar) it's gotten easier, but I still get tripped up on occasion. Even more interesting that when trying to accent the beat a bit more to keep it straight, my right hand (the fretting hand) is the one that gets sore muscles afterwards. Strange.

[Friendica]-> update to the "blockem" addon allows you to block/unblock authors directly from the profile photo menu of each article.

This required some minor changes to core code, so if you desire this functionality please also update the application.

New plugin - "blockem" allows to create a list of profile URL's whose content will be blocked from your stream, even if they are somebody else's contact. This is a variatiaion of the "n-s-f-w" plugin. The content is still there and may be opened if you wish, but it is collapsed by default. It also removes their profile photo from the posts in case it is offensive.

Can any of my Diaspora friends shed light on what has changed with markdown links and images? They no longer seem to link correctly. Do I need to change Friendica links/images to a different format - or is it just a bug? The markdown syntax also isn't linking if entered directly into a Diaspora status editor, but I've seen no changes in any of the markdown documentation.
