Lots of little fixes in the last few days. I think we should probably push a new tag - no new features, just a stability snapshot. Any objections?

It seems to be stable enough at the moment ;-) No objections from me.

Hopefully some of you will find this new Friendica plugin useful: buglink

Provides a little icon at the bottom of each page which takes you to bugs.friendica.com - please use this if you need to report a bug/issue. Talking about them in conversations is fine, but they really need to be in the tracker.

#friendica 2.34 tagged. UI cleanup, contact management, friend suggestions, "common contacts", poco, and a fix for issues friending people who are using "derivative" themes. Dropdown @-tag completion (posts and comments). OAuth and gwibber connectivity to the API. Better Diaspora photo handling. "share url"/bookmarking is now opengraph aware. The name has changed.

And more.

@dej friend suggestions are based on how many of your friends are friends with 'x' but you're not. This is based on public info so if people hide their friends, these won't be included.

Mentions are most compatible between systems, but we won't send mentions to somebody mentioned in a private conversation that isn't a part of that conversation. Don't know what D* does here.

We have some philosophical differences about tags, but I'm working on ways to prevent tag hijacking. Tags work across the networks, but hijacking leads to disparities - it reduces the information value of small sites and we like all sites to have a level playing field.

Yeah, FB adds some stuff mostly to seed the search for brand new people, but some of these have ethical issues. We do need a way to seed new users, but scraping other people's email and storing all the addresses and keeping a record of who ever searched for whom is not the way we like to do business.

I've found a way to stop tag hijacking. I tried it last night on the shared tag activity stream messages and believe it will work. I will be updating the problem channels (Diaspora and Twitter) in the next few days.

Tags and mentions links in comments are handled automatically by Friendica. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be. It has nothing to do with getting a "mention message", it's just that it's what people expect.

And don't worry about thread hijacking. I could talk about baseball and it would usually end up turning into a bug report about some obscure feature.

Friendica's "contact edit" page is now in my sights. There are a lot of new features to fit into the page, but it really looks like shit - not to mention that the available options change completely depending on whether this person appears in your stream due to email, Facebook, Friendica, Diaspora, blogs/feeds, or StatusNet.

It's time for a complete overhaul.

Facebook achieved popularity here in Brazil ONLY after the information leakage event. Before that, almost no Brazilians on Facebook. The weirdness that make somebody goes into a social network just after being reveiled that that network is completely insecure is the same weirdness that make somebody find funny #takethislollipop.

It was a halloween marketing gimmick which shows a short video of a nerdy sociopath who appears to be downright scary, trolling Facebook data. It's a Facebook app that you need to give permission to run, and what you see as you look at his screen is that he is trolling *your* data and friends. At the end he finds your location and jumps in his car, looking very distressed.

I'm literally three lines of javascript away from having tag autocompletion in the comments and the WYSIWYG post editor. But it's Friday night. The big question is whether I'll be able to get it done before the #homebrew kicks in.

Think of it like a blog, where you often see "categories" for every post. What you are seeing is the post categories (and if you subscribe to a blog in Friendika, this is exactly how we will show you the article categories). Tags are merely a type of "category".

This will become more obvious over time as we can now add tags to posts that other people have made. These tags won't be seen in the post, but they will be seen in the list of tags/categories at the end.

In the duepuentozero theme we make these tags/categories at the end of the post slightly transparent to show that they aren't really a part of the message.

Other themes may display them differently.

As for longhorn (Windows Vista).
Horn in portuguese is "Chifre".
And to have a horn is the same as to be betrayed (sexually infidelity) by your wife or husband. So a Long Horn would be a funny name for an operating system.
Some say this was one of the reason for the change to Vista (look, vista sounds quite confortable in latin languages).

Drum roll please.... "Facebook style" friend suggestions have arrived at Friendica.

There's still some room for UI cleanup on this one but it works right now (!). Visit the url 'suggest' with the latest code drop and after allowing 24 hours to start analysing who's who in your network and who they're connected with.

Suggestions will get better and better as more people upgrade and also currently works best if you have more than one friend since we're plotting your existing social graph (unlike Facebook which seeds the process with people that've searched for you in the past or connections that were discovered whilst trolling peoples' email).

It's network agnostic and will even recommend Diaspora and identi.ca and Facebook folks. We don't care, though you might.

Oh, and big thanks to @John Tucker - we now have profile updates flowing to Diaspora. When you update your profile, the handful of fields that Diaspora recognises should get updated (after a bit of a wait, this is low priority communications). However, Diaspora will only recognise your first five profile_tags/public_keywords - so put your important ones at the front.

This has already been helpful, especially since I've not had many friends yet to climb on board, in spite of a number of zingers to Twitter and FB. Did one yesterday about having a Dislike button, which so many FB folk claim they want. I said Friendica has it, built in. :)

Friendika shared tagging is now live for developers. Shared tag support has also been added to the N-S-F-W plugin. This is a powerful combination. It means you or any of your friends can retro-actively tag a post not safe for work and the plugin will hide/collapse the offending content from future viewers, regardless of whether the original author was polite enough to do so.

Currently this has only been tested under duepuntozero and derivative themes. Please file an issue at bugs.friendika.com if this messes up other themes, but more likely is that this action/option won't be visible.

A side effect is that the documentation will need to be upgraded as content search will no longer be able to use "boolean" mode. I don't believe this will have a huge impact as I have not seen any examples of people using boolean-search operators in tags.

Ok, I see the "add tag" in quattro and after I filled out the pop-up with test the notice was added

Tobias Diekershoff tagged Mike's Status with #test

And I guess this is the part of the logs for the action

2011-10-25 04:41:26 tagger: tag test item 48305
2011-10-25 04:41:26 item_store: created item 48743

The "activity" was created just fine, but when the activity arrived on my system it should have updated the tags on my existing post.

I found the problem. I believe it has now been solved (cross fingers).

Not a yellow bellied black snake sleeping on a red rock? :D Stomp around the long grassy areas! I'm glad you didn't tread on it and get bitten.

Actually it had a bit of a yellow streak. I've only seen red-bellies in that paddock and this was similar, but the town vicar says that the yellow marks definitely makes it a copperhead (the Aussie copperhead, not the American rattler).

The nearest anti-venom is 32 minutes away if you ignore the speed limits. You'll be dead in 10.

Made a lot of progress on shared tags. There are still a zillion little details remaining to be sorted out, but I can actually see tag activities now and attach them to other peoples' posts - and this is going to be bloody awesome.

The steam train is once a year. Twice if it doesn't need and spare parts that year.

But there's a Cockatoo Run every Tuesday and Thursday using 1930's vintage diesel engines. It's like an Aussie version of the Orient Express.

There's also the "Ghan" which crosses the outback - but I think crossing the outback while being pandered in luxury is completely missing the point.
Tobias

I'd say that doing anything while being pandered in luxury is missing the point in most cases, but this sounds like one of the more extreme cases of missing the point.

There are some big changes coming to Friendika. I mean like huge. I mean like so freaking big I can't even tell you about it.

But I'm not writing this to taunt you. All will be revealed in good time.

I think that our recent performance and UI work - as well as better handling of all the weird and funky Diaspora message types, deserves a "midpoint release". I believe most of the big issues of the recent past are settled and things are relatively stable at the moment, so a "stable" tag (2.32) has been created.

@David Benfell if you use the @accountname and not the @Full Name (I think the alias you can set in the contacts dialog will work too) then ~f autocompletes to the current Full Name automatically ;-)
Mike

The accountname isn't obvious. We really need an interactive search for @ tags that show you photos, names, and profile links, so you'll always get it right.
