Question...
Question... Is it OK for the media to manipulate us - if the manipulation is all about making it seem like we're better off? Or not? Headline news. The stock report. All three major indexes are shown with green arrows pointing upwards. Everything's up. Then they go into a couple of individual stocks which were of course both up and down. It caught my attention only because I'd already seen the indexes, and it wasn't a triple green day yesterday. If you had the volume down or were distracted, you might have missed the important words 'for the year'. Nevermind that every other day they show you the daily tallies in this time slot. Today they just want you to see green.
Larry Flynt for guv'nor? Yeah, let's open some casinos to solve the state's fiscal crisis. If he hadn't opened the campaign with 'I sell pornography', he might have stood a chance. He still might if he shows a lot of flesh in his campaign ads. Long as it isn't his.

The reported resort to astrology in the White House has occasioned much
merriment. It is not funny. Astrological gibberish, which means astrology
generally, has no place in a newspaper, let alone government. Unlike comics,
which are part of a newspaper's harmless pleasure and make no truth claims,
astrology is a fraud. The idea that it gets a hearing in government is
dismaying.
