Now they call it nethack, they used to just call it hack. It's the ultimate unix time sink. It's a game. Return from the dungeon carrying the Amulet of Yendor. It's been a long time so I downloaded fresh sources and fired it up. Damn. Won't recognize any of my terminal settings. That means I have to use h,j,k,l to get around. Damn. The X11 and Gnome options don't work on my box - even though I have both. I really dislike using h,j,k,l to get around. I want cursor keys. Looks like I'll have to fix the darn thing. Again. Last time I did this was ten years ago. Sigh. See what I mean about buggy software? Glad they aren't using MVC. On the positive side I've got some notes from when I last attempted to make this thing work on a Sun-3 terminal. [1986-1987].
Maybe I shouldn't bother. I've aced this game. I walked out of the dungeon with the Amulet of Yendor. Fifteen years ago. No small feat. Don't want to talk about it. I could tell you stories about the dungeon, but you need to discover it on your own.
It doesn't seem plausible to me that there is the kind of God who
watches over human affairs, listens to prayers, and tries to guide
people to follow His precepts -- there is just too much misery and
cruelty for that. On the other hand, I respect and envy the people
who get inspiration from their religions.
